I scraped together a few million doing trade, or actually mostly doing "VIP Taxi" missions since those cna pay 500k-1m for 5 minutes of mission. It's still pretty damn confusing though, only slightly less so. I started playing a few days ago and I've gone through a bunch of the CdrDave videos so I have some sort of rudimentary understanding of things.

I haven't touched AP in a month or so, but it seemed like the fleet system still needs some tuning to be a replacement for something like CODEA. The universe map also now has search + autocomplete functionality when you start typing in sector names. The sector maps are similarly enlarged and easier to work with. Before, they only used about a third of the vertical real estate at 1920x1200 and you had to do a lot more scrolling through lists. The menus take advantage of larger screens much better now. It looks for best price across all systems where you have a sat.

The Universal Best Buy/Sell Locator mod was my crutch in manual trading. There's a series of newbie walkthroughs on Youtube that I heard was pretty helpful. The game really suffers from the lack of a in-game tutorial. The "issue orders to all." command works as a good substitute most of the time. It takes a while to get used to for sure. Supposedly some of the maps were made bigger and stuff, but I don't think UI change was drastic. The combat element and the exploration element was fun but the navigation and ship assignment reminded me too much of EVE Online.

It was so difficult to get it running well and to search for places to buy and sell to that I eventually stopped playing. what changed? I found that the worst part was trying to assign orders to my wings to consolidate my ships or to start trade routes. I've heard whispers that this game had a better interface than X3:TC. X3:TC, while having a lot of objects on screen at once, isn't exactly extremely beautiful or anything and I had to turn a lot of options down on a 2008-late era iMac. wish I would have stuck with the Windows one and did Boot Camp.

I bought X3:TC on the App Store for Mac and I think the performance is abysmal compared to the Windows version based on what I've heard.
